Artist Bio - Martin McFadden
"Martin McFadden, LRPS, is an award-winning, fine art photographer, whose work has received international distinction from the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain. He is currently an artist-in residence at Art Works Studios and Galleries. Martin has exhibited in numerous local and regional fine art exhibitions including the Peninsula Fine Art Center's Biennial 2004 and Hampton Bay Days Juried Art Exhibition, where he received the Mayor's Purchase Award. The award-winning image, "Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia," is now part of the permanent collection of the Hampton Roads Commission for the Arts.
In May of 2004, Martin's image "Night Canal" became a Richmond sensation by placing best-in-show in the first-ever photography competition put on by the Richmond Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau. Posters of the winning image, which are suitable for framing, were printed for the RMCVB and have been used during the past year to promote tourism in the city. This image is also part of the permanent collection of the MCV Foundation and is on display in MCV Hospital.
Martin's images of Shockoe Bottom have been included in group shows such as the 11th Juried Photography Exhibition at the Griffin Museum of Photography, the International Print Competition at Gallery International, Images 2005 at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, the Mid-Atlantic Art Exhibition: All Media 2005, the Regional Photography Exhibition at the Washington School of Photography, and Radius 250 at Artspace. His most notable accomplishments in 2005 include publication in The Photo Review 2005 International Photography Competition and the entire body of Shockoe Bottom images receiving Best-in-Show at the Spring Stockley Gardens Arts Festival.
His most recent work features graffiti of Richmond and the inner-city of Dublin, Ireland. The "tag" of the graffiti artist has no limit to access, time, or space. Instead of photographs that merely document the graffiti artists' work, these images offer Martin's response to the elements within."
